Luckily, there are easy-to-use solutions out there, even if you don’t know your [word] from your [similar word]. Which one is best for you depends on your business’s needs.

What’s the difference between a Site Builder and a CMS?

A site builder is a tool that allows a person to select from a variety of predefined templates and insert their own content. It typically includes basic website features such as ecommerce capabilities, social media connections, and the ability to analyze trends about site visitors

A CMS (Content Management System) is a site builder on steroids. In addition to being able to select from a massive library of existing templates, you can also create your own (or hire someone to do it for you). You’ll also get access to thousands of plugins that extend the basic functions that come with the CMS.

What does all this mean for me?

Consider the following scenarios:

Jennifer is about to open a barbecue restaurant. She wants to get a website up and running as quickly as possible. She knows her site is going to need the following pieces of information:

Directions to the restaurant

Opening hours

The menu

A page talking about the restaurant

A contact form

Bob also wants to create a website for his restaurant. It’s been in hisfamily for 75 years, and he wants to promote it as a combination tourist attraction/restaurant. He wants to include the following things on his site:

A photo gallery

A custom-built widget that shows the evolution of the restaurant’s menu over time

An info page about the restaurant and the original owners

Jennifer decides a brochure site would serve her needs best. By putting up a streamlined, static site, she can quickly update information about her business, modify her menu, or change her site’s appearance. In addition, static sites are easier to secure than interactive ones.

Bob realizes that he needs something more flexible, something that can provide the information his customers need, while allowing him to include additional plugins and custom code within his site.

Which solution is best for you depends on your needs and your site’s purpose.

Jennifer decides that a sitebuilder is the best fit for her needs.

Bob chooses…

TLDR: Site builders, such as Wix, Weebly, or Duda, are good for quickly getting a site up and running. If you need a site that delivers advanced or unusual capabilities, consider a CMS like WordPress.

Want to learn more about how I can help develop your site?
